Putnam County resident John Towers of Mahopac was arrested on Friday, March 29 after he was caught in possession of images depicting the sexual abuse of children, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday, April 2.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Towers' arrest followed an investigation that began in February, when the office's Bureau of Criminal Investigation received information that a Town of Carmel resident had photos containing child pornography. Bureau members then executed several search warrants with the help of electronics storage detection K9 Hannah, leading to Towers' arrest, authorities said.
Following his arrest, Towers was charged with:
- Two counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child;
- Three counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child;
- Endangering the welfare of a child.
Towers was then arraigned in the Town of Carmel Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on a $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
The investigation into Towers is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office tipline at 845-808-4377.
